Global Grants
Global grants are small-scale funds (typically between £500 and £10,000) for local groups to tackle social exclusion, unemployment and build local social capital.Global grants will be distributed by "Intermediary Bodies", usually local authorities, community foundations or other large voluntary organisations. These Intermediary Bodies will have the ability to raise the necessary matched funding, publicise the global grants programme in their area, approve appropriate projects and monitor the results of the grants. Applicants to these bodies will fill in a much simplified form and, if approved, will receive 100% funding for their project.
All projects should have progression towards the labour market as a key theme. Projects can include "soft outcomes" such as activities that increase motivation, confidence or improve interpersonal skills. Global Grants should also support the National Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy and thus should be targeted at areas of greatest deprivation or groups that are in greatest need in the labour market.
Local social capital refers to the "social glue" that holds neighbourhoods and communities together, and which has broken down in areas of deprivation. Building local social capital allows communities to become safer, more socially active and importantly far more economically cohesive and thus a place where its residents will be better able to obtain employment. A major principle of local social capital is that local people are encouraged to provide local responses to local needs.
